How we’ve designed for when an ECT or mentor is withdrawn from training
Context
Lead providers are able to withdraw or defer ECTs and mentors from training via the API.
Possible reasons for withdrawal include:
- ECT or mentor has left the teaching profession
- ECT or mentor has moved school and is no longer being trained by the same lead provider
- ECT has moved to school-led training
Possible reasons for deferral include:
- ECT or mentor is on long term leave such as maternity leave or illness leave
We’ve designed functionality in the school service so that a school user is able to see when this has happened. This will help them to then take any relevant actions, such as changing the lead provider or changing the training programme type to school-led.
What we’ve designed
We’ve designed an update to the view of the ECT / mentor record for the school user, so that a school user can see that the lead provider has told us that the ECT or mentor is no longer training with them.

From here, a school user is able to select a new lead provider if the ECT or mentor will be continuing provider-led training. They will then have to tell us who the lead provider will be.

A school user is also able to change the training programme type to school-led if the ECT will be continuing school-led training.

Finally, a school user is also able to report that the ECT or mentor has left the school and are not expected to return. This could be because they have left the teaching profession, or have moved to a different school.

When an ECT or mentor is deferred from training, we show a slightly different variation of the journey with differing content. This is shown below.

We tested these journeys with schools in a recent round of user research. We found it was well understood by users and they were able to understand the different options and what to do next.
